WELCOME TO FUN!

HAPPY FIRST-TERM SCHOOL HOLIDAY TO ALL MEMBERS OF PTEK JOGGING AND HIKING CLUB.

DEAR ALL THE JUNIORS WHO JUST JOINED THE CLUB:

On behalf of our president Sahli Salleh , our vice president Ramizah , our Jogging and Hiking Club’s committees and all of our members , I would like to say WELCOME TO OUR PTEK JOGGING AND HIKING CLUB!

As you guys already see from the video shown to you during your orientation, this club is full of FUN. It’s just FUN FUN FUN FUN. BEING EXHAUSTED AND TIRED IS FUN. SWEATING HEAVILY LIKE YOU’RE A SHOWER IS FUN. IT’S JUST LIKE THAT, FUN FUN all the waaaaaaaay FUN.

Personally, I was never a physically active person before I joined this club. Back then in high school, I used to fake all kind of stomachaches just to skip my P.E. classes. And that happened every week , to an extent when I was given a very strict P.E. teacher in form five , I would sometimes SKIP THAT VERY THURSDAY OF SCHOOL to skip P.E. classes. But since PTEK, things have changed.

It’s not a lie when people tell you CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES THAT YOU HAVE JOINED ARE VERY IMPORTANT FOR YOUR FUTURE. Universities don’t just look at your academic performance. They look at your academic performance AND your curricular activities. These days, almost all of us can perform decently well academically. So when a university has to choose between a straight As student with no curricular activities at all and a straight As student or maybe a student with some As some Bs but took part in many many variety of curricular activities , trust me the university would choose the latter!

The reason behind this is that, A UNIVERSITY would want someone who can perform ACADEMICALLY WELL but at the same time does not study 247 to achieve such result! A university wants someone who, with limited study time and brilliant time-management skill, can achieve such decently-well result who also, at the same time, be able to PLAY MUSIC, PLAY SPORTS, PARTICIPATE IN THIS AND THAT.

This is because, they want to know that you can SURVIVE in their university. You have got to be able to manage your time for many activities when you’re in a university. You don’t just go to school, come home from school, study, sleep and go to school again the next day. For those who are going abroad to study , you guys may need cook for yourselves , wash your own dishes , wash your own clothes , tidy your own rooms , AND ALL OF THESE ACTIVITIES TAKE TIME. Apart from all of those already-time-consuming things, you might need to catch a train for yourself, or walk yourself to school, and all of those very tiring and time consuming stuffs. A university wants to know that you can do all of these time-taking activities and still perform well academically! I hope this makes sense because that’s how I think of it.

BY JOINING OUR CLUB, OR ANY OTHER CCA CLUBS, YOU HAVE THUS SHOWN THEM THAT YOU NOT ONLY KNOW HOW TO STUDY! YOU STILL HAVE TIME TO GO OUT AND PLAY, YOU STILL CAN HAVE FUN WHILE ACHIVING GOOD GRADES, THAT’S WHAT THEY WANT TO KNOW!

AND ANYWAY BEING PHYSICALLY ACTIVE MAKES YOU HEALTHY. THAT’S A FACT YOU CAN NEVER DENY.

And I am just VERY VERY VERY PROUD to announce that our PTEK JOGGING AND HIKING CLUB is one of the most ACTIVE clubs in the college. We once won a most-active club award few years ago.

Every week there’s jogging session and most of every week, we will have hiking trips to interesting places (minus fasting month of course)!!

So what happened was, ever since I joined this club , I had this strong-iron-determination to keep myself active in this club till the very end. I don’t skip jogging sessions without valid reasons, I don’t skip hiking trips unless I really can’t make it. From a very lazy me to this very active me,THIS CLUB HAS CHANGED ME.

So it can too change you, to those who were never physically active in the past , I tell you not to worry! Just keep your determination alive and have fun! For the sake of your health, your personal statement for universities in the late future and most importantly, for you to have FUN!!

Perhaps my post has become so long that me myself seems to have forgotten the point of this post. The point is , THIS CLUB IS FUN. YOU WON’T REGET HAVING JOINED THIS CLUB. YOU WON’T REGRET IF YOU MAINTAIN YOUR ACTIVE MODE TILL THE VERY END. IT HELPS YOUR HEALTH. IT HELPS YOUR FUTURE AND IT HELPS YOU TO HAVE FUN!

Another point of writing this post is because, I am having fun myself! I love typing. I love writing. I love posting and expressing my self. DO you?

DEAR ALL THE JUNIORS IN THIS CLUB, WHO EVER INTERESTED IN BECOMING REPORTERS OF THIS CLUB , there are two vacancies. I will need a main reporter and an assistant reporter for this club. The job of reporters will be writing articles regarding this club, its jogging sessions and its hiking trips. It’s to be reminded to those who are interested that IT IS NOT EASY. It takes commitment and passion and most importantly, time-management skills must be there. Having to deal with so many subjects in school (5 in my case), writing on an average of two articles per week might sound too demanding, but then again , YOU WANT TO SHOW THOSE UNIVERSITIES THAT YOU CAN KEEP CALM AND DEAL WITH IT.

WANNA GIVE IT A TRY? register to SAHLI our president when school reopens. He will then give the names to me and I will then reduce the number to two persons through the articles that they make. Thank You. <3 HAVE A NICE HOLIDAY YOU GUYS. – reporter Caroline.

TASEK LAMA : 17/FEB/2012 FRIDAY

FRIDAY 17th February 2012 – Jogging and Hiking Club (JHC) from Pusat Tingkatan Enam Katok had its very first hiking of the year at Tasek Lama, Bandar Seri Begawan. It was a cloudy, rainy day. However, this is never a problem for the club members of this club. Printed on the club’s shirts is a quote that says “ We jog for exhaustion , we hike for danger’ and therefore regardless of the weather , the members of JHC who participated for this exciting journey , 5 teachers and 32 students, still strived determinedly in the rain, to reach the end point of the hike. At 8.00 a.m. , prayer is recited in unison by the members. Excitement filled each member as we started the journey right away after. Prayer was recited again upon reaching the part of the mountain where slippery steep slopes were seen. The dangerous part of the hike therefore began. Members of the club took their responsibility very seriously with safety as the one and only priority. At 9.30 a.m., JHC members proudly crossed the end point in their soaked-wet uniforms and smiles of satisfaction and accomplishment on their faces.

BUKIT TERAJA - informal

okay. this is my very first time managing a blog which isn't mine. i am not an expert in this really. so since i'm also responsible for the writing of articles to be published in the newspaper , i was thinking that maybe i can write about the trips that we have had and that we are gonna have ,INFORMALLY.. here based purely on my point of view and i will just copy paste the formal ones that i have published in the newspaper when they come out. sounds good?

Last Sunday , which was on the 24th of July 2011 , we jogging and hiking club members went for a trip to Bukit Teraja! With around less than ten teachers i think. A bus brought us there of course , but that bus , wasn't just any ordinary school bus. In fact , it wasn't even a school bus. it was sort of like a big tourist bus with adjustable chairs and also a television! We were all very comfortably seated in that bus. It was just right. So we departed from katok at 7 ish and arrived at the long house at 9 ish. Donations were given to the people living in the long house in the form of food and money. We also made very good use of the toilets available just outside the long house ;)

Okay this is really hard for me. Can i be a little bit personal here? I will be! We left the long house and arrived at the entrance to Bukit Teraja at 10 a.m. sharp , and I was scared alright. I was forewarned about the presence of leeches that would fall off randomly , unpredictably from trees and they were just gonna stick on your skin forever unless you burnt them away! That was one of the reasons why I was moving forward so fast , because I was aware that the more I was moving , the less chance leeches were gonna climb onto me , or something like that.

At 12 ish , we all reached the summit. We were literally gaping weren't we? i mean , some of us and i was one of them. to be so happy to reach the summit , so happy to witness the scenery of so much dragonflies flying across the sky. It sort of reminded me of the movie Avatar. Life , spirit , jungle and nature. I will upload the pictures soon , blogger uploader isn't working very well currently. So okay , after taking a short break , we moved backwards from where we came from. ups became downs , which was a good thing. Before we knew it , we had accomplished the highest hill in brunei BUKIT TERAJA! no more hill in Brunei that we can't climb now huh :)

After the hike , we went to wasai for lunch! almost every man took a bath and most of the women didn't hehehe :) different kind of foods were laid out on the table before us and we all ate with full appetite :) I was so curious how every food was gonna taste like so i think i tasted almost every food. well almost! i was that hungry. we left wasai at 2.55 a.m and arrived at katok again before 5.00 p.m.

It was overall a really fun but tiring trip. I slept more than ten times in the bus. The teachers were talking in front , women were mostly sleeping and the guys were singing at the back. it was fun. i wish to go there again next year hhehe :)

and ohh fatin and the ex president afiq got leeches on their skins :P

The Mighty Bukit Teraja!

Sorry for the delay in blog,I was busy and sick for a few days.Last Sunday on the 24th of July, the PTEK Jogging & Hiking club went to hiked Bukit Teraja, Belait. It all started when most of the students and teachers came around 6:30 in morning. All of them were excited about the prospect of this trip and hiking one of the tallest mountains in Brunei. As soon as we came, we all left with the bus around 7 AM.

The journey took almost 2 hours at least. We made a stop at the longhouse in Belait to donate some necessities to the people living in the longhouse. After that we continue the journey to Bukit Teraja. Once we reached there, we all gathered and pray for our safety. Once we're done and ready, the journey started there. It was tiring and challenging and the part of the hill is so steep. Part 1 of the hill was completed almost 2 hours. Before starting part 2 of the journey to Bukit Teraja, we decided to take a break because it's a tall hill.

Like the first part, part 2 is the most difficult part, especially getting to the summit. Have to go through obstacles and avoided thorns and leeches. It took us 2 hours to reach the summit and once we reached there, we were surrounded by dragonflies IF some of you noticed it.We took this opportunity to rest and take pictures.Once we're done, another 4 hours journey back to the starting point.

Journey back to the starting point was tiring for everyone. Most of us got hungry and thirsty ads well. Steep hills stood in our way but nothing can stop our desires to go back to the starting point and devour our cuisine! All of us were worn out and relieved when we reached the starting point especially I, Mohammad Mizwar was relieved. We entered the bus and went to the Wasai to change and had a little picnic. Everyone laughed and chatted with one another, it was a fun trip overall. Everyone enjoyed it. Once we all ate and changed our clothes, we packed out stuff and journey back to PTEK.

In the bus, well , most of us fell asleep but some lighten up the whole atmosphere by singing throughout the journey. Can tell they're not tired AT ALL. We all had fun at the end of the day. Everyone enjoyed this experience and hopefully one day we might hike Bukit Teraja again.

This is Mizwar signing off!

PTEK students hike up Bukit Shahbandar's 16 hills

By Caroline TCW

Students of PTEK's Jogging and Hiking Club pose for a group photo. - CAROLINE TCW

The Jogging and Hiking Club of Katok Sixth Form Centre (PTEK) recently ventured out to Bukit Shahbandar in an attempt to hike up all 16 hills.

The excursion, which involved some 15 students and seven teachers, was accomplished in less than three hours after a 10-minute warming up period that was led by the club's new president, Sahli Salleh.

The hike, which promptly began at 8am, took place on a beautiful day and students could hear the roar of jet engines as fighter planes flew back and forth across the blue sky.

Taking into consideration the different strengths and weaknesses possessed by the hikers of the group, the outdoor activity was a good platform for cooperation between members of the club as they all aspired to conquer the 16 hills.

Covered with perspiration and smiles, the hikers succeeded in scaling the final hill at around 10.45am. With a great sense of achievement, the hikers then proceeded to a teacher's residence for refreshments at the end of the trip.
